Yashaswi dazzles with 179 not out as India reach 336/6 v Eng at day 1 of 2nd test

After losing the first Test India won the toss and batted first at Vizag in the 2nd test and ended the day on 336/6 courtesy a brilliant hundred from Yashaswi Jaiswal who is still unbeaten at the end .

Apart from a responsible hundred from Yasaswi Jaiswal, the first day in Visakhapatnam was was a bit disappointing for India .  Although Rohit won the toss and decided to bat first.  On the first day of the second Test, the discomfort of the Indian batsmen in front of England's spinners was revealed many times as India kept losing cheap wickets against the run of play .  At the end of the day, India were 336 for 6.

In red ball cricket, India's middle order without Virat Kohli & KL Rahul is a cause of concern for Rahul Dravid.  Batters like Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer are unable to adapt to the familiar environment at home.  More than half of India's runs in Visakhapatnam on Friday came from the bat of Jaiswal (179 not out).  After completing the 151-ball second Test century, he batted with responsibility till the end of the day.  17 fours and 5 sixes came from his bat.  Yashshwi played a magnificent innings of 171 runs against the West Indies in the debut Test.  On this day, he surpassed his top score .  Indian cricket fans will be waiting for his double century on Saturday.

Apart from the young opener, no one could give confidence to India's innings.   Rohit Sharma too failed scoring only 14 .  India scored only 40 runs in the first wicket pair.  Rohit (14) was dismissed by debutant Shoaib Bashir.  The young spinner, who could not come to India with Ben Stokes due to visa problems, was the first to hit the Indian camp as Rohit was caught down leg side .  Shubman failed at number three again.  He was looking good but  dismissed by veteran James Anderson.  Shubman hit 5 fours in an innings of 34 runs that promised much but flattered to deceive .  Although the start was not bad, Shubman's lack of patience in batting was evident.  Shreyas's contribution is 27, dropping to number four.  A  ball from Tom Hartley dismissed the KKR skipper like an apprentice.  Rajat Patidar, who made his Test debut on this day was shaping up well .  Batting at number five, he scored 32 runs.  His careful innings included three boundaries but he was very unlucky to get out as the ball rolled off his bat to hit the stumps

Akshar Patel batted better than the recognized batsmen of the team.  However, the left-handed all-rounder was out to  Bashir in the last stages .  He gave an easy catch to Rehan Ahmed who was at point.  He scored 27 runs with the help of 4 fours.  The composure required in red ball cricket was not seen in anyone except Jaiswal .  Srikar Bharat also tried to bat unduly aggressively in the last over and got out to Rehan for 17 .  At the end of the day Ravichandran Ashwin is with Yashshwi at 22 yards.  Yashshwi is unbeaten on 179 and Ashwin on 5 runs.

Yashaswi played a gorgeous knock . He attacked the spinners at the slightest of opportunity as he smashed 4s and 6s at will . However with wickets falling Jaiswal realised the need to stay at the wicket and controlled his strokeplay in the latter half of the innings . He kept rotating strike but even in the final session he did got miss any loose deliveries to take full toll . He completed his 100 with a huge 6 as he played several dazzling strokes and showed the temperament to stay long at the crease at the same time .

Rehan is the most successful bowler in England.  He took 2 wickets with 61 runs.  Bashir, another Pakistani born  spinner from Ben Stokes' team, took 2 wickets at the cost of 100 runs.  Hartley and Anderson took 1 wicket each.
