Root century rescues England to 302/7 after day 1 of 4th test v India
England fought back in style on day one of the 4th test to end in the driver's seat after a fine Joe Root century . Winning the toss and batting first , England slumped to 112/5 at lunch before Root led a great recovery as the tourists end day one at 302/7 .
India started well with debutant fast bowler Akash Deep playing for a rested Bumrah impressed greatly in his long first spell of 7 overs beating the bat often compared to the more senior Siraj who looked subdued . Akashdeep had Crawley's stumps cartwheeling in his 2nd over but was called for a no ball . However soon he had 2 wickets quickly getting Duckett (11) caught behind and Pope (0) lbw via a DRS . Crawley looked dangerous and played some fabulous drives and flicks before he was bowled by a sharp incutter from Akashdeep for 42 .
Root and Bairstow joined forces but after a promising start Bairstow was lbw to Ashwin for a breezy 38 . Stokes was lbw to an unplayable Jadeja ball for 3 that kept very low and England limped to lunch at 112/5 .
Pitch seem to ease up after lunch as Root and Foakes got into a superb century partnership playing sensible cricket and cutting out extravagant shots like the reverse sweeps and ramps . Both played on the merit of the ball as they build up a typical test partnership of 113 runs before Foakes (47) was caught at midwicket of a rejuvenated Siraj . Tom Hartley (13) was bowled by a beauty from Siraj that left him . However Ollie Robinson batted stubbornly with Joe Root to remain 31 at close while Root completed his much awaited 31st test 100 and his 10th against India . It was a classy test knock where Root played with great skill and application and did not try any extravagant shots which was his undoing in the first 3 tests . He remained 106 not out as England ended day one at 302/7 and on top .
Akashdeep took 3 wickets for the day and all in the first spell while Siraj took 2 wickets while Ashwin and Jadeja took 1 wicket each as the pitch eased up and slowed down as the day progressed .
