WPL24: MI stun DC on last ball 6 in a thriller in cracking start to season 2
The WPL 2024 started on a rousing note at Bangalore after a glorious opening ceremony and then a first match to remember . The opening ceremony was held with dance numbers from young actors Kartik Aryan , Siddharth Malhotra , Tiger Shroff , Shahid Kapoor & finally the veteran Shahrukh Khan. Finally the 5 captains came to the stage on charriots for a photo session with the trophy after which it was time to start the opening match .
Delhi Capitals lost the toss and batted but lost Shafali (1) early bowled by MI new recruit Shabnim Ismail , the South African quick. However skipper Meg Lanning and Alice Capsey formed a fine partnership in which Capsey looked in breathtaking form as she hit several dazzling 4s and 6s . Her footwork to spin was amazing to watch . Meg Lanning took some time to settle before she too started hitting crisp boundaries on her way to 31 before she was caught by Sajana off Sciver . However Jemima Rodrigues came & showed fine touch in hitting some skillful boundaries .
Finally Capsey was out for 75 in 53 balls lbw to Kerr while Rodrigues made a breezy 42 in 24 balls while Kapp made a quickfire 16 as Delhi reached a formidable 171 in 20 overs .
For Mumbai , Sciver and Kerr took 2 wickets each .
In reply Mumbai lost Hayley Mathews (0) in first over caught behind off Kapp . Yastika Bhatia and Nat Sciver then had a brief 50 run partnership before the aggressive Nat Sciver (19) departed bowled by Arundhati Reddy which brought Harmanpreet and Yastika together
Both had a 56 run stand . Yastika played some fine drives , cuts and pulls and reached a superb 50 . Finally she departed for 57 caught at the boundary by Kapp off a pull off Reddy . Mumbai seemed to gradually falling behind the asking run rate but Harmanpreet continued punishing loose balls as she had another good stand with Amelia Karr who also belted some boundaries before she was bowled by Shikha for 24 off 18 balls .
With 2 overs remaining MI needed 22 . Harmanpreet managed 10 off 19th over including a last ball 6 off Sutherland. With 12 needed in last over Pooja got out first ball to Capsey but then Kaur hit a 4 off the 4th ball but got caught in the fifth . With 5 needed for a win off the last ball debutant Sanjana hit a mighty 6 off the last ball to complete a thrilling win for Mumbai Indians from the jaws of defeat. Harmanpreet for her 55 off 34 balls was the player of the match . Reddy and Capsey took 2 wickets each for Delhi but it was a heartbreaking loss for the Delhi girls after looking like possible winners for most part of the match .
