India lose U19 WC 2024 final to a dominating Australia
Once again India lost in the final of the ICC competition. India lost to Australia in the final of the one-day World Cup last year. There was an opportunity to avenge that loss. But like the seniors , the juniors lost to Australia in the final. Indian batsmen could not stand in front of Australian bowling. As a result, India's dream of winning the sixth World Cup remained elusive. Australia beat India by 79 runs to become U-19 World Cup champions for the fourth time. India has won it 5 times .
Australian captain Hugh Weibgen won the toss and decided to bat first. Because, in the 14 finals of the competition, only four times the team batting first has won. Webgen decided according to the strength of their team. Because Australia was playing four pacers in the final. So Weibgen wanted to bat first. That plan proved correct.
Australia did not start well. Opener Sam Konstas did not get a run. Raj Limbani bowled him with a beauty . The other opener Harry Dixon was in form. He played some impressive shots. He targeted left-handed pacer Naman Tiwari. Captain Weibgen accompanied Dixon. Both continued to drag the team's runs. 78-run partnership between the two
It was Tiwari who brought India back into the match. Coming to bowl in the second spell, he first sent back Weibgen for 48 runs and then Dixon for 42 runs. Both batsmen missed out on fifties. Australia's Indian origin batsman Harjas Singh caught the eye in the final. He did not get a single run in this competition. But he got in the final. He tied a partnership of 66 runs with Ryan Hicks for the fourth wicket. Harjas opened his arms against two Indian left-arm spinners, Mushir Khan and Sowmi Pandey.
Horjas scored the only fifty in Australia's innings. However, Pandey dismissed him after 55 runs. Ryan scored 20 runs. Oliver Peake (46*) dragged Australia's innings to the end. The Indian bowlers could not get him out. Australia eventually scored 253 for 7 in 50 overs, the most by batting first in an U-19 World Cup final. For India, Limbani took 3 wickets, Tiwari 2 wickets and Pandey and Mushir 1 wicket each.
In response, India came under pressure to bat. They lost their first wicket at 3 runs. Arshin Kulkarni is out. He was dismissed by Callum Vidler. The Indian batters could not open their hands in front of the four pacers of Australia. Pacers were using the pace and bounce of the pitch. Dixon dropped Mushir's catch. Otherwise India would have faced more problems.
India's run rate was very low. Only 28 runs in 10 overs. Mushir tried to increase the speed of the run a little from there. But after 22 runs he was bowled by Mahli Beardman. India's second wicket fell for 40 runs. Again the responsibility of taking the match towards India fell on the shoulders of captain Uday Saharan.
Uday made runs in the semi-finals but did not make runs in the finals. He edged Beardman outside off and got out for 8 runs. Another semi-final hero Sachin Dhas also failed in the final. He was dismissed off the first ball of Aussie spinner Raf McMillan. Sachin scored 9 runs. India lost 4 wickets for 68 runs.
As time went on, the pressure was mounting on India. The asking run rate was increasing. Indian batters could not play aggressively. Priyanshu Molia and Aravelli Avneesh also did not get runs. India lost 6 wickets for 91 runs. There was no way back in the match from there. Adarsh Singh scored 47 runs but it didn't work. Late Murugan Abhishek narrowed the deficit a bit with a belligerent 46 runs . In the end, India's innings ended on 174 runs and a win by 79 runs for Australia.
Beardman for his great bowling of 3/15 won the player of the match while the player of the tournament went to Kwena Maphaka of South Africa . Maphaka the Protea quick took 21 wickets in the tournament
