WPL24 : Navgire blitzkrieg stuns MI as UPW storms to emphatic 1st win
After winning their first two matches in the Women's Premier League, defending champions Mumbai Indians tasted defeat. Harmanpreet Kaur's team lost to UP Warriors on Wednesday. Batting first, Mumbai Indians scored 161 for 6 wickets. In reply, Alyssa Healy's team scored 163 for 3 in 16.3 overs. Warriors got their first taste of victory in this competition.
However, Harmanpreet & Shabnim Ismail did not play against the Warriors on Wednesday. Nat Sciver Brunt led Mumbai instead of her. Warriors captain Healy decided to field after winning the toss. Mumbai took advantage of the opportunity to bat first and picked up runs to fight for. Mumbai opener Hayley Mathews scored 55 runs off 47 balls and played some glorious shots though she survived few chances . The West Indies batsman had 9 fours and 1 six in his innings. Another opener Yastika Bhatia made a sparkling 26 off 22 balls. 3 fours and 1 six was hit by the wicketkeeper-batsman. None of Mumbai's other batsmen scored big runs, but all contributed in one way or another. Brunt (19 off 14), Amelia Kerr (23 off 16), Pooja Vastrakar (18 off 12), Wong (15 not out off 6) kept the scoreboard moving. Warriors' most successful bowler Grace Harris took 1 wicket for 20 runs. Sophie Ecclestone took 1 wicket with 25 runs. Healy used five bowlers. Each took 1 wicket.
In response, the two openers of the Warriors started to bat aggressively. Skipper Healy scored 33 off 29 balls. She has 5 fours in her innings. Kiran Navgire was more aggressive than the Australian wicketkeeper-batsman. The 29-year-old Indian batsman played an explosive innings of 57 runs off 31 balls. She launched a fierce assault on the Mumbai attack during the powerplay and decorated her innings with 6 fours and 4 massively powerful sixes. Healy and Kiran put on 94 runs for the first wicket at breathtaking pace which almost sucked the life out of the more fancied Mumbai Indians . However, Tahila McGrath (1) did not get a run at number three as she was lbw to Wong . After this, Harris and Deepti Sharma paired up. Both played aggressively and tried to win quickly. Both remained undefeated in the end. Harris played a typically breathtaking innings of 38 runs off 17 balls with the help of 6 stinging fours and 1 six. Deepti's contribution was 27 off 20 balls. She hit 4 fours and showed efforts to hit some big shots . Deepti suceeded in hitting couple of good pull shots. None of Mumbai's bowlers could perform as expected on the day. The most successful bowler Issy Wong took 2 wickets for 30 runs after being expensive initially . 1 wicket for 34 runs was taken by Amelia Kerr.
Navgire for her belligerent knock was the player of the match .
Even after this day's loss, Mumbai retained the second place in the points list with 4 points in three matches. On the other hand, Warriors finished fourth with 2 points from the same number of matches.
