WPL24: MI outplay Gujarat Giants , Kerr , Ismail shine

Mumbai Indians beat Gujarat Giants by 7 wickets.  Harmanpreet Kaur's team won two consecutive matches in the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024.  Batting first on Sunday, Mumbai restricted Gujarat to 126 runs.  After that MI won the match by 5 wickets with 11 balls left.  Mumbai topped the points list.  They got 4 points in 2 matches.

Mumbai won the first match against Delhi Capitals with a last ball six in a thriller .  Sunday didn't have to wait until the last ball though.  Bowling first, South African pacer Shabneem Ismail and New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr stopped Gujarat Giants for  a low score .  Together they took seven wickets.  Shabnim took the top three wickets and Kerr took four wickets.  Gujarat was stuck with few runs due to their influence.  Nat Sciver Brunt and Hayley Matthews took one wicket each.  Saika Ishaque of Bengal bowled only one over in this match.  She gave 8 runs in that.

Due to the dominance of Ismail at the top Gujarat had a poor start losing Veda Krishnamurthy (0) & Harleen (8) both lbw to fast paced deliveries . Litchfield (7) was dismissed by Sciver while Mathews dismissed Hemlatha (3) . Mooney (24) finally was dismissed by Ismail to a brilliant leg side catch by Yastika Bhatia and then Amelia Kerr got into the act dismissing Gardner (15) and Rana(0) bowled by a googly .

From 78/7 Gujarat had a fine stubborn stand between Bryce(25) and Tanuja Kanwer (28) who added 48 to give the score some respectibility before Amelia Kerr picked  two more wickets to restrict Gujarat to 126/9.

Mumbai lost the wickets of Yastika Bhatia (7) and Mathews (7) at the start of batting with a target of 127 runs in mind.  They lost 2 wickets for 21 runs.  Gujarat needed wickets to fight with few runs in hand.  Catherine Bryce and Tanuja Kanwar brought that to the team.  But Nat Sciver and Harmanpreet quickly added 28 runs to relieve the pressure of the team.  Sciver was run out after scoring 22 runs.

Even though Sciver was out, Mumbai did not have much problem.  Harmanpreet and Kerr almost brought victory to the team.  But Kerr (31) got out with 12 runs remaining.  She ensured the team's success by forming a partnership of 66 runs with captain Harmanpreet.  Harmanpreet (unbeaten on 46 runs) completed the rest of the work after playing some lovely timed strokes .  She won the match by hitting a six.  Amelia Kerr for her crucial 31 & 4 wickets was the player of the match .
