England spinners rattle India as the hosts limp to 219/7 on day 2
India are in a big spot of bother at the end of day 2 of the 3rd test at Ranchi . After England extended their 1st innings score to 353 , their spinners got into the act and rattled India's inexperienced batting lineup as the hosts struggled to 219/7 at close with 3 days left and a deficit of 134 .
Starting the day at 302/7 , England advanced smoothly with Ollie Robinson scoring an invaluable 58 with confident shots that might well have a serious bearing on the result of this test . Once Robinson was dismissed the England tail folded up quickly to Jadeja who took 4 wickets in the innings . Root remained not out on a fabulous 122 which may well turn out to be a series changing innings .
India started poorly with Rohit nicking Anderson behind the stumps for 2 . Gill joined Jaiswal as both set about setting up the innings . Gill played some crisp shots as usual but fell lbw to Bashir . Patidar (17) had another struggle before falling lbw to Bashir and then Sarfaraz joined Jaiswal .
After a brilliant double hundred at Ranchi , Yashasvi Jaiswal showed tremendous maturity on a tough pitch , defending well and playing some delightful shots including a classical on drive down the ground off Robinson . However Bashir produced an unplayable ball that kept low and bowled Jaiswal on the backfoot for 73 .
Sarfaraz was too defensive and got into a shell allowing the English spinners to dominate which finally led to his dusmissal caught a slip off Hartley for 14 off 53 balls .
After Ashwin (1) fell cheaply to further put India into a hole , India was partially revived by Dhruv Jurel who again looked impressive and looked to score . Jurel (30*) was ably supported by Kuldeep (17*) who showed solid defence as they added an unbeaten 42 run stand to take India to close at 219/7
The 3rd day will be highly critical for India as this partnership needs to carry on as long as possible to get the deficit to below 100 . Indian bowlers need to get their act together in the second innings to stage a fightback .
