Australia manage to shed early jitters to reach 279/9 on day 1 of 1st test vs NZ , Green gets ton
The condition of a team whose entire top order has been sent to the pavilion within 100 runs can be estimated. Australia's condition was similar in the Wellington Test with New Zealand. Only 89 runs were added on the score board in the first innings when Smith, Labuschagne, Khawaja, Head – all these top batsmen were out and sitting in the dressing room. It seemed that it would be difficult for Australia to score even 150 runs. But, Cameron Green, who came to play at number 4, was not ready to surrender without a fight. Therefore, he single-handedly negotiated New Zealand and took care of Australia's collapsing innings by scoring a century.
Cameron Green made a partnership of 67 runs with Mitchell Marsh for the 5th wicket. After this, there was a 20-run partnership with Carey for the sixth wicket. Green added 35 runs with Starc for the seventh wicket. Captain Cummins and Nathan Lyon added 27 runs for the 9th wicket with 33 runs for the 8th wicket. In this way, Australia's first innings, which at one time seemed to be falling apart, came to a halt at 279 runs for 9 wickets on the first day.
At the end of the first day's play in the Wellington Test, Australia's score was 279 runs for 9 wickets, in which Cameron Green alone had 103 unbeaten runs. Green scored these runs while facing 155 balls with the help of 16 fours. This is the second century of his Test career. With this big innings played in difficult conditions, Cameron Green also tried to prove how strong his claim is to play for Australia's Test team at number 4.
Earlier in the day the New Zealand bowlers were swinging the ball on a green pitch after putting Australia in to bat . Smith and Khawaja however batted well to put on a solid 61 run stand . After looking good for his 31 Smith was caught behind . Labuschagne (1) and Head (1) went cheaply to catches behind the wicket . Khawaja (33) after a typically stubborn knock was bowled by a vicious inswinger from Henry . Finally Green had a solid 67 run stand with Marsh . Mitchell Marsh played another strokeful knock of 40 at a run a ball with cracking drives , cuts & pulls before his demise . Carey (10) went cheaply but Starc (9) , Cummins (16) and Lyon (5) stayed long enough with Green to enable him to complete his 100.
Matt Henry was the most successful Kiwi bowler with 4 wickets.
On the first day, Australia ruined New Zealand's plan to all out them. Now in the second day's play, Australia will definitely try to take its score to 300, from which it is 21 runs away. Since only the last wicket is left, this task looks a bit difficult but not impossible.
