Chile wildfires creates havoc, leaves 51 dead with many more casualties expected

Viña del Mar is a quiet beach town in central Chile.  Apart from during the famous music festival here, there is an influx of tourists throughout the year.  Recently, the quiet city of Chile is burning with fire.

For the past two days, fires have been spreading in the Valparaiso area of central Chile.  The fire is spreading menacingly in the surrounding cities.  51 people have already burned to death.  The country's interior minister Carolina Toha was saying, "I realized that the number is much higher only after recovering 5 burnt bodies lying scattered on the road.  This time it is going to increase dramatically.

Wildfires are nothing new in Chile.  From 2017 almost every year during summer there is a fire somewhere.  Last year, 27 people died in the fire.  About 4 lakh hectares of land were burnt.  So far this year, 43,000 hectares of land have been on fire.  But this time the fire is spreading very fast.  In just two days, the fire has spread from 30 thousand hectares to 43 thousand hectares of land.  As a result, the administration fears that the severity is much higher than last year.

Rodrigo Pulgar was sitting in his Viña del Mar home on Friday watching the fire on TV.  He suddenly noticed that the fire had reached the house around him.  He started spreading water on the wooden roof to escape from the fire.  Even if his house is saved, not everyone is as lucky as him.  Pulgar said that around 13,000 neighbors in the area have lost their roofs due to the fire.  Many houses have been burnt to ashes.

61-year-old L. Oliver lives a little away.  He said, “Our little quiet town has become hell.  The house next door was on fire.  I was helping them.  But after that my house also caught fire.  Hot ash was flying over the body.  This area is mostly inhabited by elderly people.  We could not bring an old neighbor.  He died in the burning house in front of his eyes.

Many areas of Valparaiso are now shrouded in thick black smoke.  However, the administration is growing concerned about the nearby residential areas.  The fire brigade has started rescue work with trucks and helicopters.  "The situation is really worrying," Chile's president said in a televised interview.

Environmentalists are also worried as the number of wildfires in Chile increases day by day.  According to them, this year due to El Nino, drought and heat wave, the fires have taken a terrible shape in such a short time.  Besides, there is the effect of global warming.
