New Zealand rattled by South African modest bowling as 2nd test gets more interesting
The 2nd test between New Zealand and South Africa is promising to get more interesting contrary to the one sided 1st test.
After getting brutally thrashed in the first test , South Africa has fought hard and has taken a crucial 31 run 1st innings lead over New Zealand after 2 days of play in the 2nd test .
Batting first South Africa , greatly weakened by their leading players being involved in the just concluded SA20 , fought hard on day one to reach 220/6 . Several of their batters had promising starts but none could extend their stay and mistly lost their wickets against the run of play . Brand (25) , Tonder (32) , Hamza (20) , Bedingham (39) all spurned good starts . Petersen (2) dissappointed again by Swardt (64) played a fine knock and well supported by von Berg (38). However early on day 2 the kiwis mopped up the tail quickly and the Proteas were 242 all out . For New Zealand O Rourke took 4 wickets while Ravindra snared 3 wickets .
In reply New Zealand lost Conway (0) early to Dane Paterson but Latham (40) and Williamson (43) were threatening to build another massive partnership before South Africa found a new hero in Dane Piedt.
Piedt who had given up on representing South Africa and was looking for greener pastures in USA , made a stunning comeback to test cricket after 4 years . He bowled Latham and had Williamson caught at short leg to rattle the hosts. Ravindra (29) was looking good till he was bowled by Moreki . Young (36) failed to make good his promising start and was dismissed by Piedt . Then from 145/3 New Zealand slumped to 183/9 before Wagner slammed his way to 33 . However Piedt had the last laugh claiming 5 wickets and Paterson claiming 3 to get South Africa ahead in the game as New Zealand was 211 all out .
The test is delicately poised and if South Africa manages to get a decent 2nd innings score , it would be an interesting 4th innings chase for New Zealand whi were expected to win this series 2-0 against a relatively weak and makeshift South African team
