Video : Enormous sinkhole devours soccer fields at Illinois park USA

A massive sinkhole has emerged beneath the soccer fields at an Illinois park, swallowing large portions of several fields and a major light pole.

Security footage from Alton Parks & Recreation recorded the moment the sinkhole opened up in the middle of the soccer complex at Gordon F. Moore Community Park around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

"It happened all at once on the surface," said Michael Haynes, director of Alton Parks & Recreation. "Everything went, including one of our light poles, which is now completely gone."

Officials attributed the sinkhole to a collapse in the mines located approximately 150 feet below fields three and four.

New Frontier Materials, the company managing the mines, sent engineers to the park later on Wednesday to assess the damage.

"The affected area has been secured and will remain off-limits indefinitely while inspectors and experts evaluate the mine and conduct repairs," a company representative said.

Haynes confirmed there were no injuries caused by the sinkhole, which measures about 100 feet wide and 30 feet deep. The soccer fields, featuring artificial turf installed during a $1.2 million project in 2018, will remain closed for the foreseeable future.
