Nadal exits from French Open 2024 1st ground in his potentially last appearance
On May 27, Rafael Nadal was defeated in the first round of the French Open by Alexander Zverev, with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3. This loss might mark the end of the 14-time Roland Garros champion's career at his most cherished tournament.
This defeat is notable as it is the first time in Nadal's illustrious career that he has lost two consecutive matches on clay courts and exited the French Open before the fourth round. His career record at this clay-court Grand Slam now stands at 112-4. The match took place under the closed retractable roof at Court Philippe Chatrier, with a supportive crowd of about 15,000 cheering for Nadal.
Nadal, who will turn 38 on June 3, has been battling hip and abdominal injuries since January 2023, which have limited him to just 15 matches and an 8-7 record since the start of last year. These challenges have caused his ranking to drop to No. 275, resulting in him being unseeded for the French Open for the first time.
Facing the No. 4-seeded Zverev, a former U.S. Open runner-up, Tokyo Olympics gold medalist, and a three-time French Open semifinalist, was a tough draw for Nadal. Despite this, Nadal has hinted that 2024 might be his last season before retirement. However, he mentioned on Saturday, and reiterated after Monday’s defeat, that he is not completely certain he won't compete at the French Open again.
The French Open 2024 has started with straight cut wins for the top players . While Alcaraz , Sinner , Khachanev breezed through their first round games , Iga Swaitek led the womens group with a simple win to kick off her defence . Novak Djokovic the reigning mens champion is yet to take the court.
