T20IWC : Explosive Salt , Bairstow powers England to thumping 8 wicket win over Windies
The start of the T20 World Cup this time was not good for England. The last World Cup winners were eliminated from the group stage. However, the old England returned to reach the Super 8. They defeated West Indies by 8 wickets. Batting first, the Caribbean scored 180 runs. England picked up the winning run with 15 balls to spare.
Group stage match against Scotland abandoned due to rain. England lost against Australia. In the next two matches, Jos Buttler & Co secured a place in the Super 8 by defeating Oman and Namibia. That too had to wait for Australia's win against Scotland. Phil Salt has made England scary again after getting to the Super 8. Last month his team Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL. Salt played an important role for that team.
English captain Buttler won the toss and sent West Indies to bat. Brendan King (23 runs from 13 balls) got injured in the fifth over and took 40 runs before leaving the field. Johnson Charles, the other opener, scored 38 off 34 balls. Nicholas Pooran (36) and Ravman Powell (36) also scored runs but Pooran was not in his explosive self . Salt & Buttler started batting with a target of 181 runs. Buttler scored 25 off 22 balls. Moeen Ali scored 13 runs off 10 balls. England started to shift gears after Bairstow arrived at the crease. Bairstow looked in imperious touch as he started hitting big shots.
With Salt made a pair of 97 runs. Bairstow scored 48 runs off 26 balls. Salt finally put the result beyond doubt by plundering 30 runs (3 sixes , 3 fours) in a Romario Shepherd over finally remained unbeaten on an explosive 87 runs.
In the other match of this group, South Africa defeated America. England is now ahead in net run rate. Their next match is against South Africa. That match will be on Friday. America and West Indies match is on Saturday morning.
