2024 Lok Sabha Elections : NDA leads but dented by INDIA alliance

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections took place across 543 constituencies from April 19 to June 1, spanning seven phases. Vote counting commenced at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4. The Election Commission of India announced that the counting trends and results would be accessible on its official website — results.eci.gov.in — and via the Voter Helpline application.

To secure power at the centre, a political party or coalition needs to win at least 272 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats. Should the NDA claim victory under Narendra Modi's leadership, he would become the first Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to win three consecutive terms. The BJP has already secured the Surat constituency, with Mukesh Dalal declared the winner on April 22 following the withdrawal of eight other contenders and the disqualification of Congress' Nilesh Kumbhani.

Exit polls suggested that the ruling BJP-led NDA was poised to exceed its 2019 performance, where it secured 352 seats. Some exit polls even predicted that the BJP-led NDA could achieve the "400 paar" goal mentioned by BJP leaders during the campaign. Additionally, the NDA was expected to win 2-4 seats in Tamil Nadu. According to the Axis My India exit poll, the INDIA bloc, which includes DMK and Congress, was set to win 33-37 out of 39 Lok Sabha seats.

However, the ongoing vote counting reveals unexpected trends. The BJP is unlikely to secure a majority, having reached only 240 seats and not expected to hit the 275 mark. The NDA is leading in around 300 seats, while the INDIA opposition bloc is gaining ground, leading in 230 seats.

Currently, the BJP is leading in 243 seats, which is 29 seats short of a majority and 62 seats fewer than in the 2019 elections. If these trends persist, the BJP will need substantial support from its NDA alliances to form the government. Instead of achieving the "400 paar" goal, the BJP may have to rely on a fragile majority, contingent on the unity of its alliances.

In Uttar Pradesh, the INDIA Bloc, featuring the Samajwadi Party and Congress, has made notable gains, leading in 34 seats. Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA is leading in 35 seats.

In West Bengal  the ruling TMC maintained their stranglehold leading in 29 of the 42 seats with BJP leading in only 12 seats which also contradicted the exit polls results badly .  In Maharashtra  the NDA surprisingly fared poorly but they did well in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh
