Euro24 : Netherlands overcome missed chances to beat Poland 2-1

21 shots on goal.  Only 2 goals.  The Netherlands wasted at least a dozen goals in the entire match.  Super sub Wit Ueghorst won the day for Netherlands.  The Dutch narrowly beat a Robert Leynodski-less Poland in their Euro Cup opener.

The Netherlands attacked from the beginning of the match.  Cody Gakpo, Memphis Depira were repeatedly breaking into Poland's box.  But they could not open the mouth of the goal.  Five Polish footballers were defending.  After 16 minutes, Poland went ahead against the pace of the game.  Adam Buksa headed home from captain Zielinski's corner.  Buksa started in the first XI in the absence of Lewandsky.

After the goal, the Netherlands increased the attack.  Team captain Virgil van Dijk squandered an easy chance after 20 minutes.  Gakpo, Depira had a shot on target from outside the box.  A few shots went wide of the post.

Finally, the Netherlands succeeded in the 29th minute.  Gakpo took a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box.  The ball hit the feet of the defenders and beat the goalkeeper Sezni into the net.  The Netherlands could have scored at least three more goals in the first half.  They wasted  the opportunity.

In the second half Poland planned to play every attack in the absence of Leonidski.  As a result, the possession of the midfield was with the Netherlands.  But they had to pay the price of playing extra passes to the box.  In some cases the goalkeeper  saved well.

Gradually the game was moving towards a draw.  Wieghorst came on as a substitute in the 81st minute.  He scored two minutes later.  He was right in the box.  The footballer who scored a pair of goals against Argentina in the quarter-finals of the World Cup last year defeated Sezni with a left-footed shot.

Poland did not give up even after falling behind.  At the end they got two chances.  But they could not use them because Lewardinsky was not there.  Had Lewardinsky been there, the outcome of the game might have been different.  In the end, the Netherlands won 2-1 and left the field.  However, the way they squandered one chance after another, the Netherlands could be in trouble against the big teams.
