Indian women clinch ODI series after sensational 4 run win in 2nd game vs South Africa, Smriti gets back to back 100s

 

The India Women vs South Africa Women multi format series is on & the ODIs are being played now at Bangalore . After winning the first ODI absolutely one sided riding on Smriti Mandhana's gritty 100 ,  the Indians were fiercely challenged by South Africa  in the 2nd ODI in a sensational run chase of 325 .


Batting first India lost Shafali (20) & Hemlata (24) in quest for quick runs which brought Smriti Mandhana, fresh from her previous match 100 & Harmanpreet Kaur together in another masterclass of a partnership . On a flat batting deck Smriti and Harmanpreet batted brilliantly  . Smriti Mandhana executed dazzling strokeplay in another glorious century . Her pull shots and sublime offside strokes specially the inside out shots had stamp of class as she scored 136 delightful runs . Harmanpreet stayed till the end executing shots with power and precision to score a classy 103 not out in 88 balls , Richa made a quickfire 25 as India reached 325/4.



In reply , South Africa kept losing wickets at  the top till Marizanne Kapp joined Laura Wolvaardt in what proved to be a heroic chase . Wolvaardt with her cover drives , sweeps & pulls & Kapp with her straight poweful hits specially

 down the ground had the the score move alarming got India  . However  Deepti Sharma came to India's rescue by dismissing Kapp (114 ) . Nadine DeClerk's (28) cameo and Wolvardt strokeplay took the Proteas to within 11 runs of the target in the last over but Pooja Vastrakar bowled an excellent over to bring India a thrilling 4 run win and take an unassailable 2-0 series lead .


Earlier in the 1st ODI ,  a gritty 117 by Smriti Mandhana  on a tough batting pitch and her stands with Deepti Sharma (37) and Pooja Vastrakar (31) helped India to reach 265 on a challenging pitch.  Smriti took her time and then unleashed her dazzling shots as she grew more in confidence to script a magnificent 100. 


In reply South Africa  never got going after Wolvaardt (4) was bowled by Renuka Singh. Middle order efforts from Luus (33) and Kapp (24) only delayed the inevitable.  Asha Shobana took 4 wickets as India bundled out the Proteas for 122 for a big win .
