T20IWC24 : Jones powers USA to clinical win over Canada in style in WC opener

 


America, one of the hosts, started the T20 World Cup in style by defeating Canada by 7 wickets in the opening match at Dallas .  Batting first, Canada made 194 for 5.  In reply, USA romped to their target and scored  197 for 3 in 17.4 overs.  Monak Patel's team took advantage of the confidence gained in win over  Bangladesh in the preparation series.


 After winning the toss, America's captain Monak decided to field.  Canada's two openers did not make a bad start.  Aaron Johnson scored 23 runs off 16 balls.  Another opener Navneet Dhaliwal played an innings of 61 runs off 44 balls.  He hit 6 fours and 3 sixes.  Pargat Singh (5) at number three did not get many runs.  At number four, Nicholas Kirton scored a belligerent 51 off 31 balls.  3 fours and 2 sixes came from his bat.  Apart from this, Shreyas Muva remained unbeaten with a breezy 32 runs off 16 balls, hitting 2 fours and a six.


 Harmeet Singh, the most successful American bowler, took 1 wicket for 27 runs.  Corey Anderson took 1 wicket for 29 runs.  Ali Khan took 1 wicket for 41 runs.



USA did not get off to a good start after going into bat with a target of 195 runs to win.  Opener Steven Taylor  was dismissed on the second ball of the innings.  The other opener skipper Monak scored 16 runs off 16 balls.  Losing 2 wickets for 42 runs, America fell under some pressure.  But the aggressive batting of Andris Gouse and Aaron Jones in the third wicket partnership gave America victory.  Their pair plundered  131 runs with blistering hitting .  Andris scored a superb 65 runs off 46 balls.  He hit 7 fours and 3 sixes.  Jones was more aggressive.  A dazzling unbeaten innings of 94 runs off 40 balls came from his bat.  He hit 4 fours and 10 explosive sixes to sound a warning to other teams .  Earlier in T20 cricket, no batsman could hit so many sixes for America in one innings.  In the end, Anderson remained unbeaten by 3 runs.


 Canada's most successful bowler Dillon Heiliger took 1 wicket for 19 runs.  Kalim Sana took 1 wicket for 34 runs.  The rest of Canada's bowlers did not benefit much.


Jones for his scintillating batting display was the player of the match .
