Euro24 : England & Denmark play tame draws to secure next round spots
England secured the top spot in Group C with a lackluster 0-0 draw against Slovenia. While this result ensured England's advancement to the Euro 2024 knockout rounds, it did little to validate their status as pre-tournament favorites. The match marked the third consecutive game where England's fans were left frustrated, with the team managing only three shots on target.
In contrast, Slovenia celebrated a historic milestone by progressing beyond the group stage for the first time. Their players and fans rejoiced as the draw secured their third-place finish in the group after three draws.
Denmark finished second in Group C, narrowly edging out Slovenia due to a better disciplinary record following a dull draw with Serbia. Although neither team performed to their potential, Denmark was marginally better in an otherwise forgettable encounter in Munich. Both Denmark and Slovenia ended with identical records, necessitating a tiebreaker based on the number of yellow cards received. Denmark received fewer, excluding a booking for Slovenian coach Novakovic Milivoje, which gave Denmark a slight advantage.
Despite not winning any group games, Denmark and Slovenia advanced, while Serbia was eliminated. Jonas Wind had a goal disallowed for Denmark in the first half and missed another good chance before being substituted at halftime. Denmark continued to create opportunities but struggled to convert, with Alexander Bah heading wide and Christian Eriksen's shot being saved.
Serbia managed only one shot on target, which came in stoppage time. They had a goal disallowed when Luka Jovic's shot deflected off a Danish defender while he was offside in the build-up. Denmark, knowing a draw would secure their place in the last 16, played pragmatically and lacked ruthlessness, rarely testing Serbia's goalkeeper in the second half.
As group runners-up, Denmark will face tournament hosts Germany in the next round.
