French Open : Alcaraz edges out Sinner , Zverev beats Ruud to set up mens final date
It is Alcaraz v Zverev in the French open mens final .
Carlos Alcaraz pulled off an impressive comeback to defeat Jannik Sinner, securing his spot in his first French Open final. Alcaraz, who has already won the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, triumphed over Sinner, the Australian Open champion, with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a marathon 4-hour, 9-minute match.
At 21, Alcaraz is now the youngest man to reach a Grand Slam final on all three surfaces (hard, grass, and clay) in the professional era, surpassing Andre Agassi's record. In Sunday’s final, the No. 3 seed Alcaraz will face No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev from Germany, who defeated No. 7 seed Casper Ruud of Norway 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 in his pursuit of a first major title.
During the match, Sinner, who will become the world No. 1 next week, required medical attention for his right arm and leg. Despite experiencing cramps, Alcaraz took control by winning the last two games of the fourth set and the first three games of the fifth set. Reflecting on the match, Alcaraz said, "As I talked to my team many, many times, you have to enjoy suffering."
Alcaraz and Sinner, representing the new generation of men's tennis as the Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic era wanes, have met nine times on the ATP Tour, with Alcaraz leading 5-4. Their matches are known for their intensity, often going the distance or featuring tiebreaks.
Zverev has reached his first French Open final after three consecutive semifinal appearances. He overcame Ruud in four sets, with Ruud limited by a stomach ache towards the end of the first set. Zverev dominated from the second set onwards, showcasing his top form.
Zverev, who now has eight Grand Slam semifinals under his belt, is seeking his first major title, a milestone achieved by every player who has reached at least eight Grand Slam semifinals. He has previously defeated Alcaraz in their latest major meeting (2024 Australian Open quarterfinals) and their only prior French Open encounter (2022 quarterfinals), as well as winning the last top-level clay-court event leading up to this year’s French Open.
