Rohit - Virat bids adieu to T20I ckt after thrilling World cup win , a brief lookback at their careers

The dream of winning the World Cup of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, one of the greatest batsmen in the world at present, has come true. Team India won the title by defeating South Africa by seven runs in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 played at Kensington Oval ground in Bridgetown, Barbados. India has won the T20 World Cup after 17 years while it has won an ICC trophy after 11 years. As soon as India won the World Cup, Virat announced that he would no longer play for Team India in this format. Shortly after Virat's retirement, Indian captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20 International cricket. Both the legends finally announced their retirement only after winning the T20 World Cup.

Rohit was part of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and he played as a player in that tournament. This was Rohit's ninth T20 World Cup, popularly known as 'Hitman', and he is the player who has played the most matches in the T20 World Cup.  Virat won the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. But since then, Team India's title drought continued. However, now Rohit and Virat's dream of winning the T20 World Cup together has come true.

With Rohit and Virat retiring from T20 International cricket, an era in Indian cricket has come to an end. These two giants have led Team India to victory on many occasions. Rohit bid farewell to this format as the world's highest run-scorer in T20 International cricket, while Virat bid farewell to T20 International cricket while being at number two.

After playing the role of a mastermind in getting India its second T20 World Cup, Virat said goodbye to T20 International cricket saying that now it is time for the new generation to take over the reins. Kohli scored 76 runs in 59 balls with the help of two sixes and six fours in the final and was the Player of the Match in the seven-run win over South Africa in the final. After receiving the award, he said that this was his last T20 International match.

After winning the T20 World Cup, Indian captain Rohit Sharma, like Virat Kohli, said goodbye to T20 International cricket saying that this is the right time to retire. Rohit was also the captain in the 2022 T20 World Cup when India was defeated by England in the semi-finals.

Rohit said in the post-match press conference, "This was my last match too. This is the perfect time to retire. I wanted to win the title at all costs, I cannot describe it in words. This is what I wanted and it happened. I was very desperate for this in my life.  I am happy that we could win this time.

Rohit made his debut for Team India in this format in the 2007 T20 World Cup and played an important role in making India the champion in the first event itself. Now in his 9th T20 World Cup, Rohit, while captaining, led Team India to this title for the second time after 17 years and with the final of this tournament, said goodbye to the format forever.

Rohit not only made Team India the champion under his captaincy, but also played an important role in it with his explosive batting. Even though he got out after scoring just 9 runs in the final of the tournament, the Indian captain had earlier scored explosive half-centuries against England in the semi-finals and before that against Australia in the last match of the Super-8. Rohit scored the highest 257 runs for India in 8 innings of the entire World Cup, which included 3 half-centuries.

Rohit ended his T20I career with the most runs and sixes

Rohit's journey in this format was great. He ended his career as the batsman with the most runs, most centuries and most sixes in T20 International. Rohit also played the most 159 matches for India and scored a record 4231 runs at an average of 32. His strike rate was 140.89, which included 5 centuries and a record 305 sixes.  Not only this, after Virat Kohli, Rohit is also the second highest run scorer in the history of T20 World Cup with 1220 runs. Along with this, with the victory in the final, he also registered a record 50 wins for Team India in T20 International.

Even though this was Kohli's last match, he ended his T20 International career with many records for Team India. Kohli made his T20 International debut for Team India on 12 June 2010 and played his last match in June 14 years later. He played 125 T20 matches for India, scoring 4188 runs with an average of 48.69 , which is second only to Rohit Sharma.  Kohli scored 1 century and 38 half-centuries in his career and his strike rate was 137. Not only this, Kohli ended his journey by scoring the highest 1292 runs in the history of T20 World Cup. He also has the highest number of 15 half-centuries to his name.

Thus an era in India's T20I cricket history ended with the retirement of the two stalwarts of Indian batting . Its ow time for the next generations to take over in the shortest format
