T20IWC : Bumrah leads India to thrilling 6 run win over Pakistan in a low scoring thriller
The latest chapter in the "greatest rivalry" may have lacked quality but delivered high drama, as a resilient India, led by the indomitable Jasprit Bumrah, narrowly defeated a faltering Pakistan by six runs in a low-scoring T20 World Cup match on June 9.
India, captained by Rohit Sharma, struggled on a difficult pitch, collapsing to 119 all out in 19 overs despite Rishabh Pant's gutsy 42 off 31 balls after being put in to bat under overcast conditions. Pakistan, needing 48 runs off 48 balls with eight wickets in hand, appeared poised for victory but fell apart under pressure.
Bumrah (3/14) and Hardik Pandya (2/24) turned the game around with incisive spells, reducing Pakistan to 113 for seven in 20 overs. Arshdeep Singh held his nerve in the final over, defending 18 runs to secure another famous win for India over Pakistan.
India made several mistakes, including dropping crucial catches of Rizwan (31 off 34) and Babar Azam (13 off 10) early in Pakistan's chase. It was India's second win in the tournament, while Pakistan suffered their second defeat, following a shocking loss to the USA in their opener.
Earlier, Pant's lucky but crucial knock was the highlight for India, as the rest of the star-studded line-up struggled on a challenging surface. Pakistan bowled India out with an over to spare, with Naseem Shah (3/21) and Mohammad Amir (2/23) impressing the most.
India lost seven wickets for just 28 runs after being 89 for three in the 12th over. Rain delayed the start of the game by 50 minutes, and after another rain interruption, Babar Azam chose to bowl first. Rohit Sharma hit a sublime six off Shaheen Afridi in the opening over, but rain halted the game again.
Virat Kohli (4 off 3) hit a glorious cover drive off Naseem Shah but was soon caught at point. Rohit (13 off 12) followed in the next over, mistiming a shot to deep square leg off Afridi.
The drop-in pitch, criticized before the game, provided assistance to both pacers and spinners, but was not as unpredictable as in previous matches. With India at 19 for two, Axar Patel (20 off 18) was surprisingly promoted to number four to protect Suryakumar Yadav. Axar played some bold strokes and shared a 39-run stand with Pant.
Pant, who had a streaky start, played a pivotal knock, hitting three fours off Haris Rauf and a reverse slap off spinner Imad Wasim. He shared a 31-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav (7 off 8), taking India to 81 for three in 10 overs. However, Pakistan fought back, taking four wickets while conceding only 15 runs between overs 11-15, leaving India struggling at 96 for seven.
Shivam Dube was caught and bowled by Shah, while Suryakumar was caught at mid-off. Pant was out attempting a straight drive, giving Amir his first wicket, and Ravindra Jadeja was caught next ball. Hardik (7 off 12) couldn’t last long, leaving India with a modest total to defend.
