T20IWC24 : West Indies survive a scare vs PNG before getting 1st win
West Indies survived a scare against PNG but won their first match in T20 World Cup. They beat Papua New Guinea. The hosts won by 5 wickets.
Batting first, Papua New Guinea was under a lot of pressure. They lost their 1st wicket in the second over. The second wicket fell in the next over. Romario Shepherd and Akeal Hussain picked up the wickets of Papua New Guinea's Tony Ura and Lega Siaka. Captain Asad Vala scored 21 runs off 22 balls. He was trying to survive at the crease. But Alzari Joseph took his wicket.
Sesay Bau scored a fine half-century for Papua New Guinea, who were all out for 136 runs. He scored 50 runs off 43 balls. Joseph took his wicket. Papua New Guinea could not score too many runs as wickets fell at regular intervals. However, wicketkeeper Kiplin Doriga played an important innings of 27 runs from 18 balls. He kept the team in the fight .
In reply West Indies lost key wickets in the run chase. Johnson Charles got out on the first ball lbw but PNG missed a big review vs Pooran when the ball hit his pads . After that the match was stopped for some time due to rain. When the match resumed, openers Brandon King and Nicholas Pooran added 53 runs. During their innings, it seemed that the Caribbean team would easily win the match. However Pooran (27) and King (34) got out in quick succession to build pressure. Ravmon Powell was dismissed for just 15 runs and Sherfan Rutherford scored only 2 runs as PNG snared more crucial wickets and made the match interesting .
However Russell hit a six on the field as soon came out . That took all the pressure off. Russell (15 not out) won the match by partnering Roston Chase (42 not out in 27 balls ). It was actually Roston Chase who held the innings together, and finished the game by hitting a series of big shots as the target got closer . Chase earlier took a great catch in PNG innings and was the player of the match . West Indies thus after a few hiccups won the match and took home two crucial points .
