Major Train accident of Kanchenjunga express in North Jalpaiguri India leaves many casualities




Nine people, including seven passengers and two railway staff members, died and 41 others were injured when three rear coaches of the stationary Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express derailed on the morning of June 17. The derailment occurred after a goods train collided with it in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district. According to the Railway Ministry, nine people sustained serious injuries and 32 had minor injuries. The injured have been transported to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling the incident tragic and offering prayers for the swift recovery of the injured. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will visit the accident site in New Jalpaiguri to oversee relief operations. The impact of the goods train’s locomotive near Rangapani station, about 30 kilometers from New Jalpaiguri, caused the three rear compartments to derail.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the site and announced that the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has started an investigation into the cause of the accident. He stated that ₹10 lakh would be given to the next of kin of the deceased, ₹2.5 lakh to the seriously injured, and ₹50,000 to those with minor injuries. Mr. Vaishnaw confirmed on X that rescue operations have been completed.
