T20IWC : South Africa survives another scare before getting past USA in super 8s , DeKock shines

South Africa narrowly avoided an upset in the T20 World Cup as the United States fell short in a determined run chase.

In the Super Eights stage, South Africa set a challenging total of 194 for four in their 20 overs. Making their debut in the competition, the US came agonizingly close, but Aidan Markram’s team held on for an 18-run victory. Quinton de Kock was the standout performer for South Africa, smashing five sixes and seven fours in a breathtaking 74 off 40 balls.

Markram supported with a sparkling  46 off 32 deliveries, while Heinrich Klaasen's late-innings burst, including three sixes in his 36, along with contributions from Tristan Stubbs (20) , set an imposing target.

US opener Andries Gous anchored their innings with a magnificent unbeaten 80 off 47 balls, hitting five fours and five sixes, and almost steering his team to a historic win.

Despite Gous’s efforts, he lacked significant support until Harmeet Singh struck 38 off 22 balls, including three sixes. However, when Singh was caught off Kagiso Rabada with 11 balls remaining, the US's hopes were dashed as South Africa successfully defended their target.

The victory placed South Africa at the top of Group 2 in the Super Eights, with England and the West Indies set to begin their second-round matches on Thursday.
