Rohan Bopanna becomes oldest player in doubles history to get no 1 ranking

Indian player Rohan Bopanna created a new history in tennis.  He became the world's number one as the oldest player.  The official ranking is yet to be released.  But when it is released next week, Bopanna will become the number one player in doubles.  He created a new feat after reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old Bopanna, along with teammate Matthew Ebden, defeated Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in the quarterfinals.  The result is 7-6, 6-4 in favor of Bopanna team.  The Indian-Australian pair will play against unseeded Tomas Machach and Zhizhen Zhang in the semi-finals.  Bopanna's name will be announced as the number one player in the world only after the competition is over.

The Indian player has broken the example of the American player of Indian origin Rajeev Ram.  In October 2022, at the age of 38, he became the number one doubles player in the world.  Bopanna's teammate Ebden is going to be the number two player in the world.

Bopanna became the number three doubles player in the world in 2013.  That was his personal highest ranking to date.  He became the fourth Indian player to become number one in doubles after Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza.  Bopanna snatched the top spot from America's Austin Krajicek.

Before becoming number one in the world, Bopanna said that he does not want to stop now.  Said, “I have not come here just to visit.  I still have the hunger to win trophies at the highest level.  There's no reason to stop now.  A lot of players who were born after I turned professional are playing here.  But I'm happy where I am."

In 2017, Bopanna teamed up with Canada's Gabriella Dabrowski to win the mixed doubles trophy at the French Open.  However, he is yet to win a trophy in men's doubles at a Grand Slam.  He was the runner-up in the 2010 and 2023 US Open.  Last year, Bopanna made history as the oldest player to reach the men's doubles final.
