Aus Open 2024 - Swaitek crashes out , men top seeds advance

 



Australia Open 2024 , the season's first grand slam is reaching the middle stages with most top seed players in men's draw advancing to the round of 16  but there has been major upsets in the womens draw . 


The biggest upset so far in the mens & womens tennis combined has happened in the women's section as World number one and hot favourite Iga Swaitek has crashed out of this year's event after a three set clash with Czech Republic teenager Linda Noskova .  After winning the first set 6-3 in style , hitting her typical whiplash forehands, Iga looked well on course before conceding her service game at the back end of the second set which decisively turn the game around  as Noskova won the second set 6-3 . In the third set , a gripping contest was on as both the players traded breaks before Noskova broke again towards the end and then serve out efficiently to take the 3rd set 6-4 and caused a major upset  .  Noskova is to face Svitolina of Ukraine in the round of 16. 


Meanwhile reigning champion Arnya Sabalenka has won all her matches in straight sets to advance to the round of 16 and now looks the favourite to win the title back to back though Coco Gauff is around too reaching the round of 16 in style.  


In the men's draw  Carlos Alcaraz had a tough game vs L Sonego of Italy before winning in 4 sets and then proceeded to almost beat JC Shang of China in straight set before the chinese quit . Alcaraz has reached the round of 16 followed by Zverev Medvedev and Sinner .  The Italian Jannick Sinner has so far steamrollered all his opponents to move into the round of 16 while Medvedev afte playing a long previous round of 5 sets deep into the night  ,  won his next game in 3 sets to set top 


The reigning champion Novak Djokovic has won his latest match vs Argentina 's  Thomas Echeverry in 3 sets to march into the pre quarters as the event hots up . Djokovic will meet Mannarino next who surprised Ben Shelton in 5 sets .
