Cummins edges out Head to become ICC cricketer of the year 2023 , awards for Kohli, Khawaja , Sciver
ICC has announced its annual cricket awards. Former Team India captain Virat Kohli was elected ODI Cricketer of the Year, but Australian captain Pat Cummins has gone one step ahead of Virat Kohli. Pat Cummins has received the title of ICC Cricketer of the Year. Pat Cummins has been given this award by the ICC for his excellent performance with the ball and captaincy in the year 2023.
Under the leadership of Cummins, the Australian team was successful in winning the ICC ODI World Cup and ICC Test Championship titles. This award is also memorable for Cummins because under his leadership, Australia was successful in retaining the Ashes against its biggest rival England last year. Apart from this, Australia's Usman Khawaja was also selected as ICC Test Cricketer of the Year for his brilliant batting performances in away series in India and England in some tough batting conditions
Indian batsman Virat Kohli had given a brilliant performance in the World Cup on home soil last year. Last year, he was the second highest run scorer in ODIs after compatriot Shubman Gill. Virat Kohli scored 1377 runs last year with six centuries and eight half-centuries.
For him, that year will always be remembered because Kohli broke the record of centuries in ODIs of the great cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli took India to the World Cup final and also won the 'Player of the Tournament' award by scoring a record 765 runs in 11 matches.
However, Kohli lagged behind Australian captain Pat Cummins in the race for the best cricketer of the year. Cummins won the award by defeating compatriot Travis Head and India's Ravindra Jadeja and Kohli.
Cummins won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for male cricketer of the year and England all-rounder Nat Sciver Brunt won her second consecutive Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for female cricketer of the year.
Australian batsman Usman Khawaja was named the Male Test Cricketer of the Year, beating compatriot Travis Head, Indian spinner R Ashwin and England batsman Joe Root. Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu won the Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year award for the first time. She also became the country's first female cricketer to receive an ICC award. Her singlehanded match winning performances vs New Zealand in ODI series win at home playing for a weaker team like Sri Lanka helped her to get this award
Rachin Ravindra & Phoebe Litchfield won the best emerging cricketers award in mens and womens category respectively for stellar performances during the year
