Jannick Sinner overcomes 2 set deficit to beat Medvedev & win Aus Open 2024
After a long time, the Australian Open got a new champion. Jannik Sinar bounced back from two sets down in the final on Sunday to beat Daniil Medvedev. The Italian won the game 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. In the semi-finals, this player defeated the mighty Novak Djokovic. On the other hand, Russia's Medvedev lost in yet another Grand Slam final after reaching the same post a dramatic 5 set thriller win over Zverev.
Marat Safin won the Australian Open in 2005. After that in 2014, Stan Wawrinka won. Apart from this, no one outside the trio of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal has won this trophy in the last 20 years. Sinner wrote his name in that list. The way he won the trophy even from two sets behind has captured everyone's mind.
The last Italian player to win a Grand Slam was Adriano Panatta in 1976. Sinner won after that. He lost only one set in the entire tournament before the final which was to Djokovic. After falling behind in the first two sets in the final, many thought Sinner had no hope. But in the five-set game, he scripted a memorable win .
On the other hand, third seed Medvedev had another poor final. He won from two sets down in the semi-finals. But despite having the advantage in the final, he could not stop Sinner. He reached the finals of six Grand Slams but lost in five of them. Besides, Carlos Alcaraz lost the opportunity to become the number two player in the world. He is the first player to lose two Grand Slam finals despite leading the first two sets. The same instance happened against Rafael Nadal in 2022 final.
Sinner looked much fresher from the start of the match. It was clear in his game why he was able to reach the final after losing only one set. But initially he had no answer to Medved's aggressive tennis as the Russian cruised in the opening 2 sets . However Sinner gradually unleashed his full repertoire of strokes to confound Medvedev in the 3rd set and win it which put the Russian under pressure .
Sinner repeated his continous process to take a firm grip on the match as he played breathtaking shots with surgical precision to win the big moments and outplayed Medvedev in the 4th set and then again in the 5th set to capture the title...his first Grand slam
After winning the match point, Sinner dropped the racket and lay down on the court. After a few moments he stood up to receive the greetings of the audience. From there, ran towards the audience. There were two coaches Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill sitting in the Sinner box. He hugged both of them. The audience at the Rod Laver Arena welcomed the new hero with applause .
