Aus open 2024 : Djokovic gets past Fritz in 4 sets to set up SF clash with Sinner

 



Novak Djokovic continues his Australian open donination as he reached the semifinals of the Australian Open yet again .  The ten time winner  beat 26-year-old Taylor Fritz.  Djokovic won 7-6(7-3) , 4-6, 6-2, 6-3  after a gruelling match lasting 4 hours . 


Talyor Fritz clearly looked the better player during the first two sets . At 6-5 he was on set point in the first set after he matched the great Djokovic shot for shot and often outplaying him in some of the points . However he failed to cash in on his set point and then Djokovic got the points when it mattered to win the tiebreaker and snatched the first set which he could have lost  .  


However  Fritz bounced back and played glorious tennis to dominated the great champion in set 2 to win it 6-4 .


It was from that point that Djokovic raised his game up a notch and proceeded to use all his skills and experience to win the next two sets 6-2 , 6-3 as Fritz started to make costly errors from good position . This is Djokovics 11th entry to the Australia open semis which he wona record  10 times 


 Meanwhile Italy's fourth-seeded Jannick Sinner advanced to the semi-finals after winning in straight sets.  He beat fifth seed Andrey Rublev 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the quarter-finals after 3 sets of hard hitting high octane tennis . Rublev challenged Sinner with scorching strokes but the Italian who is in a hot streak having not yet lost a set in this event , was equal to the task and unleashed his full repertoire of shots to win  another match in 3 sets . Sinner who has beaten Djokovic twice in late last year will meet the Serb in a high voltage semi final on Friday .



In the women's section  Coco Gauff advanced to the women's semi-finals.  She defeated Marta Kostiuk 7-6, 6-7, 6-2. 


US open champion Gauff was not at her best in the first two sets . She won the first set 8-6 via tiebreaker but lost the 2nd set in another tiebreaker . However she found her best touch in the final set and won that  in style to reach the semis .


Gauff will meet reigning champion Arnya Sabalenka who blazed away in another straight set win 6-2 , 6-3 over B. Krejčíková.  Thus Sabalenka has reached the semis without losing a single set . The Gauff - Sabalenka semis clash will be hotly contested .
