US Open 23 : Djokovic, Shelton, Gauff, Muchova reaches semis

US Open is hotting up at the business end . In the mens section young American southpaw Ben Shelton has set up a semi final clash with Novak Djokovic while Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova both won their quarterfinals in straight sets to set up their semi final clash.

Gauff absolutely annihilated Latvian Jelena Ostapenko 6-0 , 6-2. Ostapenko,  the conqueror of Iga Swaitek in the round of 16 , just could not replicate her best against a rampaging Gauff who was in cruise control .

Muchova had pretty much a similar outing against Sorana Cirstea winning in style 6-0, 6-3 . Muchova looked in total control and looks in top form . Her semi final clash with Gauff is going to be a mouthwatering clash .  Cirstea had earlier beat Wimbledon 2022 champion and World no 4 Elena Rybakina but on this day just could not get going.

Meanwhile the Djokovic v Taylor Fritz clash was expected to be a gripping one with American crowds expected to back the local boy . However Fritz who was 0-7 head to head against Djokovic,  just could not produce the goods despite having several break opportunities across the match. The first set was won by Djokovic 6-1 bit the scoreline does not give a correct reflection with Fritz committing so many unforced errors which continued in the next two sets as well . Djokovic won the 2nd and 3rd sets by 6-4 each but did not honestly look at his best as Fritz continued to miss opportunities.

The other men's quarter final of the day had a gripping contest between two Anericans Tiafoe and Shelton . Shelton breezed through set one 6-2 but Tiafoe fought back to win 2nd set 6-3 . The 3rd set was a gripping encounter with both trading blows and finally Shelton winning an epic tiebreak 9-7 and the set 7-6 . After that 3rd set Tiafoe looked deflated and was outplayed in the last set 2-6 . Shelton sets up a semi final clash with Djokovic in another battle of generations .

The remaining two mens quarter-final promises to be gripping ones with Zverev meeting Alcaraz and Medvedev meeting Rublev

Image
It is said that the work done in anger leads to loss in some form or the other.  Sometimes to own self , sometimes to team .  The Indian women's cricket team is currently facing this loss and the reason for this is the team's captain and most senior player Harmanpreet Kaur.  Captain Harmanpreet Kaur's angry actions in the last ODI match of the Bangladesh tour may cost the team without her in the Asian Games.  The Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China in September-October.  During the third ODI against Bangladesh, Harmanpreet questioned the decisions of the umpires.  At first, Harmanpreet expressed anger on being given out and broke the stumps with the bat.  Then after the match, she raised questions on umpiring.  If this was not enough, she also taunted the Bangladeshi team for calling the umpires during the photo with the trophies of both the teams after the match, after which the hosts left the photo session & went back to the dressing...
