Videos : Heaviest rainfall in Hongkong in last 140 years cause mayhem in city

 




Record rains in Hong Kong have brought the entire city to a standstill.  Flood like situations have arisen due to heavy rains.  The situation in Hong Kong is that metro stations have been submerged in water, people who came out on the streets with their vehicles are stuck in the rain water.  The authorities have closed schools due to floods and rains.  People have been asked to move to safer places immediately.


 Many videos and photos have come out from Hong Kong, in which people can be seen passing through dirty water.  In different parts of the city, water has been filled up to more than the knees.  This city with a population of 75 lakh has come to a complete standstill.  People trapped in the low-lying areas of the city are being rescued.  Those who were trapped in the vehicles have also been rescued.  Heavy rain has been predicted on Friday also.



 Highest rainfall in 140 years


 According to the report of CNN, the rains in the city started from Thursday night.  The Hong Kong Observatory says that between 11 pm and 12 am, 158 mm of rain was recorded.  This is the highest rainfall in one hour.  Heavy rains can be gauged in such a way that this is the highest rainfall ever recorded since 1884.  The government says that this is the heaviest rain in the history of 140 years, which has stopped the pace of the city.



 Hong Kong had to face the most powerful storm in five years just a few days back.  Typhoon Saola hit the coast of Hong Kong last week.  The city had to be closed due to this storm.  Not only this, but hundreds of flights were also cancelled.  The government said that 86 people were injured due to the storm.  People were still recovering from the storm that another disaster struck them in the form of heavy rains and floods.



Transport and trade affected


The havoc of rain has been seen in the city on Friday as well.  The transport system has come to a standstill due to heavy rains.  Because of this, business has also been affected.  The stock market also cancelled trading on Monday morning.  All the schools have been closed.  Authorities have appealed to shopkeepers and companies to order non-essential employees to stay at home.  People have also been asked to go to safe shelters.




 According to the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, as of Friday afternoon, 119 people have been reported injured due to the rain.  Out of this, the condition of four people is serious.  The government has said that such dangerous conditions are going to prevail throughout the night.
