Wales hammer Australia, moves to QF of Rugby World Cup 2023
After the big result at the top of Pool B won by Ireland against South Africa the day before, it is the turn of Pool C to experience a match of massive importance between Wales and Australia at Lyon
The Welsh started superbly and scored in the third minute by Gareth Davies, well served by his captain Jac Morgan after a sharp run down the middle (5-0, 3'). Dan Biggar ensured the transformation (7-0) but has to be replaced by Gareth Anscombe nine minutes later, because he is hit in the shoulder during a dangerous incursion by the Wallabies. We then believe in a hard blow for Warren Gatland's men, but the course of events will prove the opposite.
Very intense, the rest of the first period saw the two teams create dangerous chances, notably by the Welshman Louis Rees-Zammit on his right wing, but the score was only fueled by two penalties from Ben Donaldson and three from Anscombe. The Welsh reach the locker room with a first break (16-6). Match still in the balance .
After a relatively balanced first 40 minutes, the OL Stadium crowd witnessed a one-sided second half. Faced with suffering Australians, the Leek XV escaped thanks to a try from Nick Tompkins but above all the impeccable boot of Anscombe (23 points), named Mastercard Player of the Match.
The Leek XV definitively drives home the point with a powerful maul concluded by its captain, Jac Morgan: 40-6, final score.
In need of benchmarks before this 2023 Rugby World Cup, Wales is qualified for the quarter-finals. As for Australia, it sinks even deeper into doubt, while its survival in the competition hangs by a thread.
Australia play their final match in Pool C against Portugal on October 1 and Wales face Georgia on October 7.
