ODI World cup great matches - Aus v WI 1996 semis Mohali flashback

As we approach the World cup 2023 , we go down memory lane to look back at some of the most epic matches of past World cups . Here we look back at the epic semi final contest between Australia and West Indies at Mohali in 1996 World cup . West Indies were dominant for much of the game right from the start but Australian bowlers led by Warne  fought back in style to script one of the most thrilling and unexpected wins . Let us see how the game unfolded.

AUS V WI  WC SF 1996 Mohali

A roller coaster thriller at Mohali , was decided in last over and being a World Cup semi final ,so had to be in the very best list. Australia batting 1st was subjected to a pace barrage from Ambrose and Bishop. The Caribbean giants were unplayable in the first 10 overs in which Mark Waugh(0), Taylor (1), Ponting(0) and Steve Waugh(3) were ripped out by sheer pace and hostility and Aussies were tottering at 15/4. Then came the great recovery through Stuart Law(72) and Bevan (69). Both batsmen weathered the initial storm and picked up the runs when the spinners came into operation. Their main aim was to extend Australia's innings till 50 overs .Later Ian Healy (31) provided the much needed push to get the innings somehow over 207/8 in 50 overs. Not a match winning effort but certainly something to play with. Ambrose and Bishop were star bowlers. However looking at the start they had , the Windies seemed  to lose a bit of grip on the game after Law-Bevan rescue act .

West Indies started well in their chase though lost Browne early to Warne. Lara and Chandrapaul looked in great nick as Windies were progressing comfortably, till Steve Waugh produced a great leg cutter out of the blue to knock off Lara's off stump for 45. However skipper Richardson looked solid and with a fluent Chandrapaul took Windies to 165/2 as they were cruising with only 43 required to reach the finals. However things started happening soon after as Chandrapaul (80) had a rush of blood and hit  straight to  midon off McGrath . His dismissal enabled the magician  Warne to rip through the middleorder with an awesome display of leg spin bowling by first getting Ottis Gibson caught behind and then getting the crucial wicket Jimmy Adams lbw to a flipper and Bishop following suit as McGrath and Fleming made rapid inroads from other end.Windies lost wickets in clusters as Richardson (49*) was waging a lone battle. However he lost the strike in last over bowled by Damien Fleming  who knocked over no 11 Walsh to take Australia to a famous 5 run win in an absolute thriller as Windies lost 8/37 from 165/2 as well as allowing Australia to get 207 from 15/4
