Rugby World Cup 23: Ireland beat Spingboks in a thriller , Eng thrash Chile , Portugal fight back v Georgia

The Rugby world cup had an eventful day of contrasting results . While England thumped Chile 71-0 , the other two matches were thrillers with Georgia and Portugal locked in 18 all draw and Ireland rattling reigning champions South Africa .

England debutant Henry Arundell had an excellent day , scoring five times which is a record equalling feat as Engand walloped Chile 71-0 .

After some mediocre and sluggish performances in earlier matches, England wee free flowing and clinical today against admittedly weaker opponent and are now poised to reach the next level.  Their next game will be against Samoa who are tougher opponents than Chile .

Meanwhile in a dramatic finish , Portugal missed out on a win vs Georgia in a pulsating match which saw Georgia 13-0 ahead but Portugal scripted a sensational comeback to level the match and then  Portugal wing Raffaele Storti looked set to be the hero with two superb solo tries as his side led in the dying stages only to find Georgia drawing level in the 79th minute courtesy TV match official award . Then Portugal missed a last minute penalty to steal a win as the match ended 18 all .

The last match of the day was another thriller as reigning champions South Africa was jolted by Ireland  13-8 in a slugfest at Paris between arguably the two best teams in the world in front of nearly 80000 vociferous crowd at Paris stadium

Mack Hansen’s try and five points from Johnny Sexton helped  the Irish to get past the Spingboks in a pulsating 80 minutes in which Cheslin Kolbe’s second-half try and a Manie Libbok penalty kept the Spingboks in contention before they ultimately fell short in a nail-biting finish which had no shortage of thrills .

With this win Ireland looks all set to move to quarter finals.

Meanwhile the Aussies who were surprised by Fiji earlier  will have to face an impressive Wales challenge next as they plans to improve their chances to stay in the business end of the tournament .
