Catastrophic scenes in Libyan city of Derna after flood has killed 20000 plus
The death toll in Libya is rising by leaps and bounds. The administration fears the death of 20,000 people. The mayor of Darna, a port city in Saudi Arabia, told Al Arabiya that 18,000-20,000 people are believed to have died due to the collapse of the dam.
Two dams in Darna town broke due to the devastating storm Daniel. The mayor said that the entire city was asleep when the dam broke. As a result, it was not possible for anyone to perceive that a terrible disaster had taken place outside. And that disaster is about to swallow the whole city.
One lakh people live in Derna. Storm Daniel hit the port city with great force last Sunday. The entire city changes overnight. It was as if someone had ravaged the entire city to the ground in a rush of water.
Now there is no water anywhere. All around the city of Kankalsar are piles of corpses. Under the mud, hundreds of bodies lay on the beach. As time goes on, the air of the city is filled with the rotten smell of corpses. According to a BBC report, there is a risk of infection as the bodies are left in the open. The Libyan government has asked for international assistance to quickly recover from this situation. Now there is no water anywhere in the city. Only roads covered with bricks, stones and mud. Rescue teams from Egypt, Turkey and Qatar have arrived and are carrying out rescue operations.
A resident of the city, Usama Al Husadi, told the BBC that a total of 50 members of his family were missing in the disaster. Those who survived are now searching for their relatives. Three days have passed after that disaster, but the bodies are still being recovered. The mayor of Derna said that it is not clear where this number will stop.
