ODI World Cup great matches - India v England 2011



Cricket ODI world cup over the decades have produced many gripping matches . We remember the epic 2019 final, the iconic Australia v South Africa clash in 1999 semis  and many more . In the same way the 2011  world cup produced an absolute rip roaring thriller between India and England at Bangalore  . It was a high scoring pulsating match in which ended in a tie .

On a belter of a pitch at Bangalore ,India and England played out an epic match which was one of the finest ever played in a World cup. Batting 1st India was helped by a blazing start from Sehwag who scored 35 off 26 balls after which the maestro Tendulkar took over and he looked in terrific form enjoying a great  stand with Gambhir (51) for 2nd wicket for   134   runs. Tendulkar looked in great control finally was dismissed for 120 off 115 balls, innings full of classic strokeplay. The lower order batsmen went for strokes but India faired poorly between overs 45 to 50 as Tim Bresnan produced a fine spell of fast boing taking 5/48 and restricted India to 338 all out in 50 overs.

In reply England started well but Petersein(31) could not capitalise on his start. Trott went cheaply but finally Ian Bell (69) provided the stand skipper Andrew Strauss was looking for. Strauss 
batted with skill and verve in his best ever ODI innings negotiating everything India was hurling at him.  Ultimately at 281/2 , Zaheer Khan brought India back in the game dismissing both Bell and Stauss,  the latter after an epic 158 off 145 balls. However fine cameos from Bresnan and Swann kept India under intense pressure with both teams on the edge. Bresnan was dismissed by Pijush Chawla in 49th over after tonking a 6 and in last over with 13 required to win for England , Munaf Patel even after conceding a 6 managed to keep it tight in last 3 balls and England could earn only a tie of last ball with 2 to win in a high scoring thriller. Strauss for his epic knock was the player of the match.
