Jansen stars in South Africa's big win over Australia to win ODI series 3-2

  

A brilliant all round show by Marco Jansen and Australia's over indulgence in power hitting through the middle overs leading to another collapse helped South Africa to creditably come back from a 0-2 deficit to beat Australia in the 5th ODI and win the ODI series 3-2 .

Put in to bat first  South Africa were sluggish for most part of the first 25 overs . Bavuma was runout for 0 by a great throw from Labuschagne  and DeKock playing his last ODI in South Africa made a subdued 27 by his standards but it included 4 vintage Dekock boundaries before Ellis got him . Van Dussen (30) looked good before falling to Abbott and Zampa avenged his previous game mauling by Klaasen by clean bowling him for 6 .

Markram and Miller then got into a great stand of 109 with both batters playing glorious shots all around the ground . Markram (93) finally was dismissed by David and Miller (63) followed soon  caught off Abbott . However Marco Jansen played an explosive knock of 47 off 23 balls to give fresh momentum to the innings and Phehlukwayo played a rapid cameo of 39 in 19 balls that included a 24 run 50th over bowled by Neser that enabled South Africa to go past 300 and reach an imposing 315/9. Zampa with 3 wickets was the most successful bowler for Australia .

In reply Australia lost Warner (10) and Inglis (0) both to Marco Jansen early but Marsh and Labuschagne got into a productive 90 run stand during which both looked in control and Marsh in particular playing breathtaking strokes . The Aussie captain reached 71 in 36 balls with 6 fours and 6 sixes and looked to snatch the initiative but Jansen had him caught at third man to open up the game again for South Africa.  Soon Labuschagne departed to another outfield catch off Jansen for 44 and Australia looked in huge trouble . Carey (2) was soon caught by DeKock down the leg side with a brilliant diving catch off Jansen as Australia slumped further . Jansen thus had 5 wickets.

Then Keshav Maharaj got into the act dismissing David (1) but Green (18) and Abbott (23) batted for a while and just when Australia looked to be recovering slightly Maharaj caught and bowled Green and subsequently the Australia innings ended rapidly with Naharaj getting 4 wickets . Australia lost by 122 runs being 193 allout with 16 overs still to play !!  Jansen was the player of the match and Markram with 225 runs at 56 average and 116 strike rate was the player of the series.

South Africa this came back creditably from 0-2  behind  to beat Australia 3-2 in the ODI series after having being themselves mauled 0-3 in T20I series .

Both teams made several changes each match to experiment on their combinations as well as getting some of their key players rested as part of workload management before the world cup .

However the Australia middle order batting  approach in this ODI series surprised many . After going hard at powerplay and setting up a base , instead of rotating strike and taking the game deep they tried to sustain their power hitting in the middle order as well and that resulted in multiple collapse .  Probably with Smith rejoining in the middle order before the world cup , better sense will prevail ahead of the world cup .
