Conway - Mitchell show decimates England in 1st ODI

Two brilliant hundreds from Conway and Mitchell helped New Zealand to demolish England in the first ODI and take a 1-0 series lead at Cardiff . Batting first  England put on a competitive 291/6 but glorious batting by New Zealand  made it a one sided win at the end with balls to spare .

England openers started in workmanlike fashion rather than fluently . Harry Brook struggled to 25 off 41 balls before he fended a fine short ball from Ferguson to the keeper . Malan scored a good 50 before he was bowled by Ravindra for 54 while Root (6) went cheaply to the same bowler.

Ben Stokes returning to ODI fold scored a fine 52 and had a solid 88 run stand with Buttler that promised more but Stokes was caught at cover of Ravindra when he tried to cut loose . Buttler found an ally in Liam Livingstone who smashed 3 sixes on his way to 52 off 40 balls before Southee got him out . Buttler scored a sedate 72 by his standards before falling to Southee . Towards the end David Willey played a 11 ball cameo of 21 runs to take England to 291. Ravindra picked 3 wickets and Southee got 2 wickets for New Zealand.

The Kiwis started with confidence with both Conway and Young playing impressive shots to put on 61 in powerplay before Rashid got one to spin away and castled Young (29) .

Henry Nicholls looked in fine nick as he and Conway added 56 runs for the 2nd wicket before Nicholls(26) nicked Willey to be caught behind which set the stage for Daryll Mitchell to come out and share a special stand with the ever solid Devon Conway .

Both Conway and Mitchel put on an exhibition . While Conway struck the ball crisply for his boundaries, Mitchell went for his trademark big hits and he hit 7 imperious sixes, mostly down the ground  and 7 fours to totally dismantle the England bowling attack . Mitchell timed his shots perfectly and put on a real  show as the reigning world champions England team wilted under the onslaught . Their imperious unbeaten 180 run stand took New Zealand to an empathic 8 wicket win with 26 balls to spare.  Conway (111*) hitting 13 fours and one six , got the player of the match while Mitchell finished at 118 not out off just 91 balls with 7 fours and 7 sixes
