Asia Cup23 : Bangladesh fails in modest chase as Sri Lanka keep final hopes alive
Sri Lanka won a tight match against Bangladesh to start their super 4 stage in the Asia Cup on a positive note
The hosts won the match by 21 runs. Dasun Shanaka is the captain of the hosts team was the hero with the ball. Bangladesh also had to pay the penalty of playing one less batter against Sri Lanka. Shakib Al Hasan's dream of reaching the final of the Asia Cup suffered a big blow due to the loss of this match. On the other hand, Sri Lanka's dream of reaching the final remained alive.
Sri Lankan openers Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne got off to a good start when they came out to bat first. They were running fast. But the pair did not last long. Karunaratne was dismissed for 18. Nissanka formed a good partnership with Kushal Mendis for the second wicket. Mendis scored a half-century but Nissanka was dismissed for a sparkling 40 runs.
None of Sri Lanka's middle-order batsmen got going except Sadira Samaravikrama. At one time, it seemed that Sri Lanka would have trouble scoring 200 runs. But Samaravikrama played a superb innings at the end. He scored 93 runs off 72 balls. This batsman took Sri Lanka's runs to a respectable place even without a century. Sri Lanka scored 257 runs after losing 9 wickets in 50 overs. Among them, 81 runs were scored in the last 10 overs. In the end that makes the difference. Among the Bangladeshi bowlers, Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud took three wickets each and Shariful Islam took two wickets.
In response, the two openers of Bangladesh, Mehdi Hasan Miraj ( 28) and Mohammad Naeem (21) , started the game cautiously in chasing runs. The first 10 overs saw no wickets but the run rate was low. Shanaka dealt the first blow to Bangladesh. He did not bowl against Afghanistan. Shanaka gave a surprise while bowling in this match. He dismissed both the openers.
Bangladesh's two experienced batsmen Liton Das and Shakib could not score many runs. Mathisha Pathirana dismissed Shakib in the same way in the group stage match. Due to wickets falling at regular intervals, there was no partnerships . The only partnership between Mushfiqur Rahim and Hriday was 72 runs.
After Mushfiqur's dismissal for 29 runs, the onus was on Hriday to drag the team along. He was fighting alone. He scored half a century. But on the other side, he was not able to keep up with one wicket after another. 81 runs were needed to win in the last 10 overs. In the 44th over, Hridiya was dismissed by Mahesh Theekshana for a splendid 82 runs. With him, all the hopes of Bangladesh ended. The last pair tried hard but could not win it for the team. Shakib & Co had to leave the field after losing and now they have lost the chance to reach the final .
