US Open 23 : Alcaraz stunningly crashes out in semis , its Medvedev vs Djokovic final

It is going to be a repeat US Open final of 2021 as Daniil Medvedev produced a masterclass to prevent the much talked about an Alcaraz v Djokovic final of US Open  . The tall and lanky Russian avenged his semi final defeat at Wimbledon to beat the  Spanish prodigy after 4 sets of classic hardcourt tennis . Alcaraz was the overwhelming favourite to reach the final but on this day Medvedev announced that he is still  playing in the circuit as a top level player .

The first set was very tight and it went with serve . Alcaraz missed a couple of break points but in the tiebreaker the big serving Medvedev was too good and he won 7-3 .

Continuing the momentum Medvedev  annihilated Alcaraz in the second set winning by 6-1 and now Alcaraz needed to do what he has never done before , win in 5 sets after 2 sets down .

The third set saw the Spaniard come back into his own with his trademark resilience as he broke Medvedev after 2 hours to clinch the 3rd set 6-3 .

With Alcaraz widely expected to stage a comeback, Medvedev again raised his levels in the 4th set and broke a 15 minute 6th game to lead 4-2  .

Medvedev took it to 5-3 and was serving for the final . However going for big serves after missing first serve , he double faulted and Alcaraz hung on bu saving 2 match points . The breathtaking game seesawed back and forth and finally Medvedev won on his 4th match point with a smash . The final scoreline 7-6(7-4) , 6-1, 3-6 , 6-3  in favour of the Russian .

Paying tribute to Carlos after the win , Medvedev said , "It's amazing, especially beating someone like Carlos, I lost easy two to him two times this year so I had a lot of doubts.

"I said I needed to play 11 out of 10, and I actually played 12 out of 10, except in the third set. He's pretty unbelievable so to beat him you need to be better than yourself and fortunately I was."

Medvedev hit 9 aces in this match compared to none from Alcaraz but at the same time the Russian committed 10 double faults as he was going for big second serve against Alcaraz , a tactic that finally paid off .

Meanwhile the first semi final went on expected lines as the big serving Ben Shelton paid very erratic first two sets to give Djokovic a handy lead . Novak looked in cruise control and had his tactics well in place to outplay the young American southpaw who hits the ball with fierce power .

However Shelton managed to get his game together in the 3rd set  , winning most of his longer rallies while Djokovic committed unforced errors to squander a 4-2 lead allowing the Anerican to get back to the loud cheers of the crowd . Shelton took the set to the tiebreak where however Djokovic once again showed his expertise to take a 5-1 lead and then withstood a late surge by Shelton to finally win 7-4 and move into the final . The final scoreline  6-3, 6-2 & 7-6 ( 7-4) .

So with Alcaraz out , it will be another cracking final between Medvedev and Djokovic with the latter gunning for his 24th Grand Slam to equal Margaret Court  . The Russian has beaten the Serb in their last meeting this year .
