AUS v IND WC 1987 Chennai
Just a year earlier in 1986 these two teams had played a gripping tied test and now they are at it again in what turned out to be one of the all time greatest World cup games. Australia batted first .Boon and Marsh provided a brilliant century stand for Australia, enjoying the batting surface with top class strokeplay till Boon went for 49. Dean Jones (39) provided great support for Geoff Marsh (110) to complete his hundred. Marsh played a polished knock studded with well timed drives and flicks. Later few small cameos took Australia to an imposing 270/6 in 50 overs.
In reply Gavaskar started in whirlwind fashion. hitting 37 off 34 deliveries including a 6 in a 68 run opening stand after which Srikkant (70 off 83 balls) had a rollicking partnership of 62 runs with Navjot Singh Sidhu, the strokeless wonder till last season. Sidhu scored a whirlwind 73 off 79 balls and hit the spinners for 5 huge sixes as the crowd went berserk. However at 207 Sidhu was bowled by McDermott to spark off an Aussie resurgence. Soon Vengsarkar left after a solid 29 caufht Jones off McDermott and then there was a major collapse masterminded by McDermott 's pace . Azharuddin (10) was bowled by McDermott and Shastri (12) caught and bowled by sane bowler as the other bowlers also put on the brakes on scoring. The crucial final over was bowled by iceman Steve Waugh whose tight lines sparked run outs and then the final act ,Maninder Singh was bowled with India just 1 run behind Australia in a sensational finish which however silenced the home team fans . McDermott 's 4/56 was the match winning spell but the man of the match was won by Geoff Marsh for his superb 110.
