Australia holds the edge on day 1 of 5th Ashes test despite Brook's glorious 85
Australia in their quest for 1st Ashes series win on England soil since 2001 , has started the 5th and final Ashes test on a promising note . After losing 5 successive tosses Pat Cummins finally wins a toss and put England to bat in overcast conditions. Australia brought back Todd Murphy in place of Green while England played the same squad as in Manchester.
England openers actually started well with a 66 run stand with Ducket being the aggressor till at 41 he gloved Marsh down legside to be caught behind. Crawley (23) who already had a life finally was caught by Smith off Cummins & Root (5) played on to Hazlewood as England slumped to 73/3 .
Then Moeen Ali and Harry Brook had a superb 101 run stand , dominated by an enterprising Brook, he was dropped by Carey on 4 , a sitter.
Brook took full advantage of the charmed life by playing a barrage of sparkling shots as the score jumped along while Moeen played second fiddle . Moeen suffered a groin injury and soon after was bowled by Murphy for 34 that led to another collapse as Bairstow (4) played on to Hazlewood. Soon Stokes (3) was bowled by Starc and finally Brook (85) after playing many lovely drives , cuts and pulls , fell to Starc , caught superbly by Smith for an enterprising 85.
After 4 quick wickets fell for 28 runs , it was Woakes (36) and Wood (28) who had a breezy stand of 49 to take England past 250. Finally England was 283 all out with Starc leading the way with 4 wickets while Hazlewood & Murphy took 2 each .
Australia openers negotiated the last session very well under clouds will Warner (24) was the only casualty to Woakes . Khawaja (26) and Labuschagne (2*) looked solid and saw through till the close as Australia reached 61/1 .
