How was Kajol's 1st web series - the Trial ?
Kajol's web series 'The Trial' has been in constant discussion for some time now. It is based on the CBS hit show 'The Good Wife'. The story revolves around Noyonika Sengupta (Kajol), whose husband is accused of a sex scandal and is in jail. Noyonika starts practicing law for her husband. But will she be able to put her shattered life back on track as she battles it out in the courtroom? 'The Trial' is the hallmark of this.
Unlike other legal courtroom dramas by director Suparn Verma, The Trial - Pyaar, Kanoon, Dhoka is not just about solving a complicated case. Instead, the series gives us a chance to dive deep into the life of Nayonika Sengupta. She was once an excellent lawyer. But then an incident happens in her life, which again takes her on a journey to restart her career. Forgetting her earlier success as a lawyer, Noyonika starts a junior position in a popular law firm run by her friend Vishal (Ali Khan). As her husband's high-profile case hits the headlines, Noyonika tries to strike a delicate balance between her personal and professional life.
The team of writers Abbas Dalal, Hussain Dalal, Siddharth Kumar and director Suparn Verma, through 'The Trial', shows the current judicial system, the role of TV journalists and the way a popular law firm works in a satirical manner. From the courtroom to the living room of the house, the fight between husband and wife coming from a large section has been put on the screen in a realistic manner.
However, the story lacks the required depth and seriousness. While the screenplay is also a victim of stereotypes. It could have been a layered and nuanced story. Real-life high-profile cases such as actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death under mysterious circumstances, his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty's incarceration, and Juhi Chawla's public interest litigation against 5G technology, characters are part of the series, but they are portrayed loosely .
Tales related to controversial cases in the series are part of the plot. But the focus of the show is more on Nayonika and her struggle. Kajol has given a tremendous performance as a 'good wife'. The dignity with which she confronts the turmoil within her comes across very well on screen. We get to see a glimpse of how tremendous Kajol's acting has become with age. Kajol's restrained demeanor is the main attraction of the show. Apart from her Jishu Sengupta, Ali Khan, Sheeba Chaddha, Kubbra Sait, Kiran Kumar and Gaurav Pandey have also done full justice to their characters.
The web series also has a rare kissing scene of Kajol with actor Ali Khan . This is the first of it's kind in Kajol's illustrious 30 year film career
While watching 'The Trial', many times you get an idea of what is going to happen next in the story. The story takes a convenient turn towards the climax, but there are moments in the screenplay that take you by surprise. However, the graph of this kind of legal drama could have been better with this brilliant starcast.
