Australia post 299/8 on 1st day of 4th Ashes Test helped by middle order contributions

After a 10 days gap the men's Ashes series is again under way . Australia and England fought another gruelling day of test cricket as the tourists reach 299/8 on day one . Australia made a few changes in their XI for this test . Cameron Green and Josh Hazlewood are back and Todd Murphy with Scott Boland are benched while they persisted with a struggling Warner . England brought back Anderson in place of Robinson

England captain Ben Stokes won his 4th toss in a row  and was invited Australia to bat first having lost two wickets each in the first two sessions.  Fast bowler Chris Broad gave England an early breakthrough by dismissing Usman Khawaja (3) in the fifth over of the innings getting him lbw .  David Warner (32) again failed to play a big innings.  He started well but returned to the pavilion after being caught behind the wicket off Chris Woakes.  This made Australia's score 61 runs for two wickets.

Steve Smith looked in good form, started with a hooked 4  and was doing well with Labuschagne to manage the innings.  He adopted a strategy of dominating the bowlers but Mark Wood soon put a stop to his efforts.  Smith hit 5 fours and a six in his 52-ball innings before being dismissed lbw for a sparkling  41 .

After this, Labuschagne found a good partner in the form of Head.  Labuschagne after a resolute 51 , however, returned to the pavilion soon after completing his 16th half-century in Test cricket.  He faced 115 balls and hit six fours.  He also shared 59 with Steve Smith and 63 with Travis Head.

England bowled brilliantly in the last session.  Travis Head, who was continuing to have issues with short pitched bowling , continued to play sparkling shots but  returned to the pavilion just after the tee break.  He was caught by Joe Root off Stuart Broad.  It was also Broad's 600th Test wicket.  Head scored 48 off 65 balls.  A half-century partnership happened  between Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green (16) for the sixth wicket.  Marsh (51) completed his fifty having played some dazzling strokes and was looking ominous but Chris Woakes dismissed both Marsh and Green in the same over.  Australia's score went from 254 for 5 to 255 for 7. Green was lbw and Marsh got an unplayable ball which he edged for Bairstow to take a spectacular one handed catch .

After this, Mitchell Starc and Alex Carey took over the innings with a solid 39 runs partnership between the two for the 8th wicket.  Carey (20) was also dismissed by Chris Woakes just before close . Woakes was England's best bowler as he managed to swing the ball all day and took 4 wickets . At stumps, Mitchell Starc was on 23 and Pat Cummins was on one run.  Australia's score is 299 runs for 8 wickets as this test promises to be another thriller in the making.
