Unseeded Marketa Vondrousova creates history by winning ladies final in Wimbledon 2023
24-year-old Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic has become the first unseeded professional doubles player to win a Wimbledon Grand Slam title. In the final played under the roof of Center Court, Vondrousova defeated Tunisia's Ons Zebeur in straight sets 6–4, 6–4. Jabur suffered his second consecutive finals loss.
Ons was getting a lot of support from the crowd and had started well by winning the first two games but Marketa, ranked 42nd in the world, quickly took control and Ons started making mistakes. Ons then took a 4–2 lead but lost the first set after losing five games in a row. Vondrousova loves to get tattoos done on her hands. She is a big fan of Swiss legend Roger Federer. Ons tried to fight back in the second set. At one point the score was 4-4. Marketa lost her first match point with a double fault but then sealed the match with a volley and lay down on the court in jubilation. She could not believe her victory. Later, she also went to the audience gallery to meet the family members.
This victory of Vondrosova is also important because Vondrosova became a mother nine months ago. Vondrousova had wrist surgery last year and was unable to compete. This time she performed brilliantly and defeated Jessica Pegula of America in the quarter-finals and Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in the semi-finals in upsets during her title journey.
Ons became emotional after the defeat
Ons had to face defeat in the title match for the second time in a row. Had she won, she would have become the first Arab player to win a Grand Slam but Vondrousova broke her dream. Apart from this, she also reached the doubles semi-finals of Australia Open with compatriot Barbora Strycova. She is currently ranked 42 in the world but this win will surely skyrocket her rankings .
