Wimbledon24: Krejcikova withstands Paolini challenge to win 2nd career grand slam
The All England Lawn Tennis Club's center court witnessed a thrilling battle in the women's singles final, culminating in the crowning of a new Wimbledon champion. Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic secured her third Grand Slam title of the year with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Italy's Jasmine Paolini.
In this championship clash, seventh-seeded Paolini faced off against 31st-seeded Krejcikova. Krejcikova, 17 days older than Paolini, claimed her second Grand Slam title three years after her French Open victory in 2021. Both players, born in close succession—Krejcikova on December 18, 1995, and Paolini on January 4, 1996—entered the match without offering tennis fans a new Grand Slam champion.
Krejcikova dominated the first set, breaking Paolini's serve twice and winning 6-2. Paolini, however, made a strong comeback in the second set, matching Krejcikova's earlier performance and taking it 6-2 by breaking serve twice, leveling the match.
With the score tied at one set apiece, the third set served as the decider. Krejcikova broke Paolini's serve in the seventh game to lead 4-3, then held her serve to extend the lead to 5-3. Paolini managed to narrow the gap to 5-4, but Krejcikova held her nerve in the final game, despite experiencing nervous tension and missing two championship points, to clinch the set, match, and the Wimbledon title 6-4.
This victory, achieved under significant pressure, marked Krejcikova's second Grand Slam title. Paolini, Italy's first female player to reach the Wimbledon Grand Slam final, was unable to secure her first Grand Slam title, despite her valiant effort.
