Copa24 : Argentina survive major scare from Ecuador before reaching semis via tiebreaker, Martinez saviour

 



Emiliano Martinez became the hero in the 2022 World Cup final.  Lionel Messi might not have won the World Cup in Qatar without the Argentine goalkeeper.  Martinez is the hero in the Copa America on Friday morning.  He won the tiebreaker against Ecuador.

 Messi failed to score in the tiebreaker.  Martinez covered that failure.  The match ended 1-1 at the scheduled time.  A straight tiebreaker takes place after the scheduled 90 minutes of play as per  Copa America rules.  Messi went there to take the first shot for Argentina.  The ball hits the bar.  Messi failed to score.  However, that did not stop the team from winning.  Martinez blocked Ecuador's first two shots in the tiebreaker.  With that, Messi's team secured a place in the semi-finals.

 After 34 minutes in the match, Argentina went ahead with a goal.  Alexis McAllister headed in from the corner.  Defender Lisandro Martinez got the ball.  He scored a header.  Argentina lead 1-0


 Ecuador had the easiest chance to repay the goal.  Argentina's Rodrigo de Paul handled the ball in the box in the 59th minute of the second half.  Ecuador gets a penalty.  But Ener Valencia's shot hits the post.  Ecuador could not score even with the return ball.

Argentina was on the way to the semi-finals by winning within the stipulated time.  But at the end of 90 minutes, Ecuador's Kevin Rodriguez scored.  John Iboe's cross flies into the box  and waa headed in .  The ball gets caught in the net.  The Argentinian footballers claimed offside but the referee rejected it.

 Messi could not make an impression in the whole match.  Failed to score in the tiebreaker as well.  However, despite Messi not scoring, Julián Alvarez, Alistair, Gonzalo Montiel and Nicolas Otamendi scored for Argentina in the tiebreaker.

 Argentina finally aurvived a major scare and  reached the semi-finals.  There they will play against the winner of the Venezuela and Canada match.  That match will be on Saturday morning.  Argentina semi-final on July 10.
