West Indies batters fight back in response to big Eng score in 2nd test
After the drubbing at Lords in Anderson's final test , West Indies had their work cut at Trent Bridge to put up a strong fight.
However Ben Stokes won the toss and on day one England batters plundered runs all day. After Crawley was dismissed on the first ball of the game, Ben Duckett teamed up with Olllie Pope and the two together built up a strong base as they plundered runs at will. Duckett finally fell for a breathtaking 71 in 58 balls but Pope went on to score a glorious 121 which was full of dazzling strokes . Later there were cameos from Brook (36) , Woakes (37) , Jamie Smith (36) and a fine knock from the captain Stokes who scored a fine 69 as England raced to 416 all out on day one. For West Indies Alzarri Joseph took 3 wickets , followed by Sinclair , Hodge and Seals took 2 wickets each.
In reply West Indies started to bat sedately and slipped to 84/3 at start with Braithwaite getting 48. However it was the marathon partnership between Athanaze and Hodge that kept West Indies afloat . Athanaze scored a pleasing 82 before he was dismissed . His knock was full of sublime shots particularly on the offside .
Meanwhile Kavem Hodge scored his first ever 100 in tests. He scored a superb 120 and was the part of a marathon stand with Athanaze. After Hodge's exit , Holder (23*) and Joshua D Silva (32*) saw through to close as West Indies piled on the agony for England bowlers by reaching 351/5 only 65 runs behind .
Hence now the test is in a delicate stage with 3 days still to go
