Wimbledon24: Fritz beat Zeverev in 5 sets , Alcaraz , Sinner , Djokovic , Rybakina advance

 


Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner remained on course of a semis showdown by winning their respective round 16 matches . Alcaraz had to labour to beat Humbert in 4 sets while Sinner continued his top form beating Ben Shelton in straight sets . Medvedev was leading in set 1 when Dimitrov got injured and left the match . 



Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina are set to face each other at Wimbledon, continuing their contentious history. The tennis community eagerly awaits to see if any tension will surface during their match. Meanwhile, second seed Coco Gauff exited the tournament with a loss, while Jelena Ostapenko advanced to the quarterfinals.

On Monday, fourth-seeded Rybakina and 21st-seeded Svitolina both secured victories in their pre-quarterfinal matches. Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, defeated 17th seed Anna Kalinskaya, leading 6-3, 3-0 before Kalinskaya withdrew due to a wrist injury. Svitolina triumphed over Wang Xinyu 6-2, 6-1 in just 55 minutes.


Ostapenko overcame 13th seed Yulia Putintseva in a 68-minute match, reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time since 2018, and for the third time overall. Ostapenko has dropped only 15 games at Wimbledon and spent just four hours and five minutes on court, showing strong form.


In a surprising outcome, women's second-seeded Coco Gauff was defeated by American Emma Navarro 4-6, 3-6 on Sunday night. Only two of the top ten seeds remain in the women's draw. Despite reaching the semifinals of both the Australian Open and the French Open this year, Gauff's Wimbledon run ended in the pre-quarters.


In the mens' division, Lorenzo Musetti advanced to the quarterfinals on Monday, defeating France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.


Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev played an epic 5 setter at centre court . Zverev won the 1st set 6-4 and then battled hard in the second set before winning it in the tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4) . However Taylor Fritz raised his levels to win the 3rd set 6-4 and proceeded to win the gruelling  4th set 7-6 (7-3) in tie breaker . The loss in back to back sets after leading 2-0 , was enough to snuff out the energy from Zverev who looked below par in the 5th set as a rampant Fritz won by 6-3 to set up a quarter finals clash with Musetti after a comeback from behind . 


Finally Novak Djokovic  produced another masterly performance to beat potential dangerman Dane Holger Rune in straight sets. Rune who has beaten Djokovic twice in the past , was well below his best losing the match 6-3 , 6-4 , 6-2 . Right from the start Djokovic was in total dominance winning the 1st 12 points to set the tone and he never looked back , taming the Rune serve right through the match . Rune , who never looked in rhytm ,  could not take his limited opportunities to get back and thus lost in straght sets .  Djokovic will meet the Aussie Alex De Manour in the next round .
