Copa24: Uruguay overcome stubborn Canada to get 3rd place via tiebreaker in a thriller
Canada was only three minutes away from securing third place in the Copa America 2024. Alphonso Davies and his team would have achieved this milestone in their debut participation if they had maintained their 2-1 lead. However, Luis Suarez stood in their way. The veteran star scored in extra time, equalizing the match for Uruguay. Eventually, Uruguay triumphed in the tiebreaker, clinching third place in the tournament.
From the beginning, Uruguay demonstrated a fast pace throughout the current tournament. Marcelo Bielsa's team was considered a strong contender to win the Copa America, potentially overcoming both Brazil and Argentina. However, their campaign faced a setback in the semifinals. Not only did they lose to Colombia, but Darwin Nunez was also involved in an altercation at the end of the match. Despite starting against Canada, Nunez was ineffective, leading Uruguay to substitute Suarez in the second half.
The first half ended with a 1-1 score. Bentancur scored for Uruguay within just 8 minutes, but Canada quickly responded with a spectacular scissors kick a goal from Ismael Kone in the 22nd minute. Uruguay had another goal disallowed for offside. Jonathan David then gave Canada the lead in the 80th minute, bringing them close to victory at the Bank of America Stadium. However, in the 92nd minute, Suarez, in what could be his final international appearance, equalized the match. The regulation time ended with a 2-2 score.
The Copa America does not include extra time, so the match proceeded to a tiebreaker after 90 minutes. Uruguay's Valverde, Bentancur, Arasqueta, and Suarez all scored in the shootout. Unfortunately for Canada, Alphonso Davies and goalkeeper Ismael Kone missed their penalties. Uruguay won the tiebreaker 4-3, securing third place in the tournament after a gripping thriller.
